A lightweight, full sized fountain pen made from authentic Indian Ebonite, hand polished to a semi-gloss finish with a black ABS cap.  This is a traditional flat top eyedropper pen with an ebonite barrel, black ABS plastic cap and gold pocket clip and trim. The first fountain pens were eyedroppers like this one and Ebonite was the most common material used to make fountain pens until the late 60s when plastics began to take over. Ebonite is a wonderful material for a fountain pen and today it's generally only used on very expensive pens.

Eyedropper pens get their name from the way  you fill the pen with ink - with an eyedropper. These are the original and  simplest type of fountain pens. They have no internal filling mechanism and do  not need ink cartridges or convertors. The barrel of the pen acts as the ink  reservoir. Most modern fountain pens use an ink cartridge which  contains between 0.5 and 0.75ml of ink. Convertors and Aeromatic fillers hold  about the same. Eyedropper pens usually hold between 2 - 3ml, almost 4 - 6 times  more ink. To fill an eyedropper pen you simply unscrew the section (hand  grip) from the barrel, hold the barrel upright and fill it with ink using an eyedropper or syringe. It goes without saying to keep the barrel upright  while you screw the section back on. Keeping the threads clean and the  application of a little silicon grease prevents leaking.

Ebonite is a very hard, inflexible version of rubber invented by  Charles Goodyear in 1839. It's made from natural rubber and sulphur, treated  with heat in a process known as vulcanisation. Ebonite is durable, chemically  stable, machinable, mouldable, polishes to a natural high gloss and is an  excellent electrical insulator. It's name comes from the natural wood Ebony  which it closely resembles. Ebonite was used in just about every aspect  of life from the 1800s to the 1960s when it was gradually replaced by petroleum  based plastics. Ebonite was used to make knife handles, casters, combs,  hairbrushes, buttons, jewelry, bowling balls, electric plugs, smoking pipes,  fountain pen bodies and nib feeds, car batteries and everything from domestic  power plugs to giant mains supply insulators. Ebonite is still used for  guitar picks, saxophone and clarinet mouthpieces because of it's unique acoustic  properties. Ebonite is also a brand name of ebonite bowling balls manufactured  by Ebonite International, a U.S. sporting goods company. Although it is  an extremely durable material, high heat, strong light or prolonged exposure to  water can adversely affect the polished surface of ebonite.
