This solid brass fountain pen is made from brass at least 100 years old, salvaged from the old Ipswich Railways Workshop. Work commenced on the Ipswich Railway Workshops in 1864 and the workshops were continually expanded right through to the 1980s until it sprawled over a 42 hectare site. The workshops were originally built to assemble locomotives and rolling stock imported from Britain but in 1865 they built an engine truck, in 1866 they built 10 wagons and in 1877 they built their first locomotive, an A10 Class. The workshops built 218 steam locomotives between 1877 and 1952.
The brass that we use varies dramatically
in appearance and every time we make a new batch that is markedly different, we
will make a new listing and take new photographs. We usually make these pens in batches of ten and try to
match the brass as closely as possible but each pen will be slightly different
The workshops were closed in 1995 and reopened in 2002 as the Workshops Railway Museum under the auspices of the Queensland Museum.
The barrel and cap of this pen have a wall thickness of 1.1mm. This is a solid, heavy metal pen designed to last a lifetime.
The brass is left in it's natural state with no protective coatings. The appearance of the patina will be affected by how often the pen is used and how the pen is handled. Skin oils from your fingers also affect the patina creating a pen that is as unique as you are.
We'll ship this pen with a protective oil coating and you can maintain it's appearance by regularly polishing it with a good quality mineral oil or you can simply do nothing and allow the oil coating to wear away or wipe it off with a cloth to hurry things along.
Gold plated or two toned OEM or JoWo nibs would compliment this pen very nicely.
The Heavy Metal series from Blackstone's Maxim Collection is a collection of metal pens with barrels and caps machined from solid metal bars with wall thicknesses of 1.1mm. The Maxim series includes a number of features designed to enhance and simplify the fountain pen experience. Now you can have the nib that you want when you want it. It's easy to change nibs with the Maxim's screw in nib assemblies and there is a wide range of nibs to choose from.
Maxims accept standard international ink cartridges and converters so you don't need to hunt around for that special cartridge or converter that will only fit your pen. To post or not to post is no longer an issue. The Maxim barrel is specially threaded to allow the cap to screw on and post securely without damaging the barrel or the cap.
